![]() By telling 2 parallel stories they automatically killed whatever made the original "Das Boot" such a great success. They shouldn't have made this two parallel plot thing between the story of the crew of the submarine and this useless resistance story. The 2018 sequel of the monumental "Das Boot" from 1981 would be great if the makers hadn't made one big mistake. So far, every episode has been a real treat. I've seen 7 episodes of the 8, and, quite frankly, am putting off seeing the conclusion because I know I'll miss this show badly. I docked Das Boot a point for the rather overly quick willingness of the lead woman to engage in a relationship with the head of the Gestapo, which I thought was stretching believability. It had people of similar ages and dispositions, and a similar look and feel. The German TV series Generation War (2013), which was excellent but not quite as riveting as this, comes to mind. ![]() Das Boot the TV series is another fantastic example of great European theatre. Comparisons to the movie of the same name are fair in terms of the U-boat story but not the other story. The characters are deep and really well acted. Both stories are complex and highly original, and incredibly manage to touch countless contemporary issues thrown up by the war at that time. Please, can I remove the one star I gave it and change to a solid 0/10? It is absolute RUBBISH!īasically Das Boot commands two exquisite high tension dramas, one a resistance story on land, and the other the adventures of a U-boat. PS, I ended watching it complete (must be the masochist in me). Go read the book or watch the 1981 movie -again better yet the original German TV 6 episode series (subbed of course unless you understan German fluently). Save yourselves some irreplaceable **TIME** and skip this one outright. I guess his descendants or whoever owns the rights to his works must be *extremely* pressed for money to sell that masterpiece to the butchers that produced this. Should Lothar-Günther Buchheim be still alive he would never have permitted this travesty. The script, direction, acting, photography and in general, quality is appalling. Halfway through S1E5 I'm about to pull the plug on the 7 day trial, lest they start billing my card. Amazon lured me with this series to try their new extra channels scheme for 7 days. Having really admired both the original movie (theater and director versions) as well as the 6 episode German miniseries that was never aired in America, all of which I've watched several times and enjoyed them more and more with every repass, I truly find this a bait-switch scheme.
